UK Consular official in Hong Kong, Simon Cheng, granted political asylum in Britain
Mr Cheng was forcibly disappeared for two weeks in 2019 and tortured in mainland China
Simon Cheng, a former UK consulate worker claimed to be tortured in China, announced that he has been granted political asylum by the UK government.
Mr Cheng was kidnapped in August 2019 while on a work trip to Shenzhen, the mainland Chinese border town with Hong Kong. He was held for 15 days, and tortured by up to 15 men at any one time.
Mr Cheng says he believes he is the first British National Overseas (BNO) passport holder and Hong Kong citizen to be granted asylum due to political persecution.
